North Dakota's June tornado upgraded to EF5, first in 12 years

October 10, 2025

MANILA — A tornado that struck Enderlin, North Dakota back on June 20, 2025 has been upgraded to an EF5 tornado after further assessment on Monday by the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes in the US and other parts of the world are rated from EF0 to EF5 using the Enhanced Fujita Scale or better known as the EF rating. It mainly measures wind speeds based on damage done to buildings and other objects such as trees.

The June tornado in Enderlin was initially rated as an EF4. After reevaluation, the NWS said that the damage observed was caused by winds greater than 210 miles per hour, thus making it an EF5 tornado.

The NWS said damage from the tornado included loaded grain hopper cars and a tanker car that were lofted and thrown 475.5ft away, while large trees snapped or were totally debarked.

The tornado also blew over a cell tower, swept away a farmhouse, and damaged two houses. Three people were killed in the incident.

It was the first EF5 tornado in the US in over 12 years.

The last EF5-rated tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma in 2013 and killed 24 people.

The June tornado is so far the shortest EF5 lasting for only 19 minutes.
