Mounted at a cost of millions by the Rebecca Chuaunsu Film Production and Synergy sa Digitel,”Binondo: a Tsinoy Musical” at Solaire’s The Theatre, which had its last performance on July 8, was an entertaining experience.
Rehearsals or the show started last April, according to Lighting Director Joey Nombres, an AAFI Trustee, who did an excellent job.
The story reportedly was a based on true experience, as related to Rebecca Chuaunsu by her uncle .Book and lyrics were done by Ricky Lee, Gershom Chua and Eljay Castro Deldoc. Original music and direction were by Von de Guzman.
The musical spans two decades and two countries: the 70s and 80s and the Philippines and mainland China. Through song and dance, it tells the story of Lily and Ah Tiong, torn apart by circumstances beyond their control.
The ending, while logical, did not appeal to a romantic like me , who would have preferred a happy ending, such as that of “An Affair to Remember”.
Ay any rate, the musical’s lead actors who alternated, David Ezra and Carla Guevara Laforteza and Arman Ferrer and Sheila Valderrama Martinez, certainly deserved the audience’s applause.
Kudos to Director Joel Lamangan ,an Aliw awardee, the cast, crew and producers of this original Filipino musical.
